presents Marine Minerals: The European Dimension The 34th annual conference of the Underwater Mining Institute presents Marine Minerals: The European Dimension, a forum to emphasize current and future developments in all aspects of marine minerals activities in European waters, and by European operators in the oceans elsewhere. Related activities worldwide will also be emphasized. The Institute will include specific sessions devoted to the following subject areas: Shallow Offshore Aggregate DepositsThe principal European marine minerals focus is on aggregates, used primarily for concrete, fill, and also beach replenishment. The European marine aggregate industry is the most advanced in the world and serves as a model for aggregate development in other shallow water offshore areas. The Institute includes papers on marine aggregate exploration, evaluation and recovery as well as papers on environmental concerns and mitigation strategies. DiamondsBesides aggregates, the next most important mineral commodity in shallow offshore deposits is diamonds. Diamonds are mined in abundance off Southern Africa. This year's Institute features several papers on this subject by professionals in the industry. Hydrothermal DepositsSeabed accumulations of potentially commerical hydrothermal deposits of copper, tin, silver, gold, and other metals occur both in and outside of European waters. Occurrences in the Mediterranean Sea and on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge are well known, and Mid-Ocean Ridges, Island Arcs and Oceanic Hotspots worldwide also host potentially large and high grade deposits. Marine hydrothermal deposits are currently being studied with commercial and scientific objectives, and this year's Institute includes papers that describe the state-of-the-art in both the economic and academic pursuits related to these fascinating deposits. Conference InformationThe VenueImperial College London is a worldclass leading centre
of excellence for the teaching and research of science, technology,
and medicine. At its South Kensington campus there are over 200 meeting
rooms with an extensive and sophisticated host of conference specialists
and services. The UMI encourages all participants to consult with the
Centre for Professional
Development for registration, lodging, and other needs. The UMI
begins with an evening registration reception followed by two days of
technical sessions and an evening banquet. The final event will be a
field tour of the Cornish Tin Mines. Technical Chairs and HostDr. David Cronan of The Royal School of Mines, as well
as President of the International Marine Minerals Society, is our host
and technical co-chair this year. Dr. Charles L. Morgan, a former President
of IMMS and longtime worker in the area of seabed minerals, has served
as UMI Program Chair since 1994.
