The 34th Annual Underwater Mining Institute (UMI) presents, Marine Minerals: The European Dimension, a forum to emphasize current and future developments in all aspects of marine minerals activities in European waters, and by European operators in the oceans elsewhere. Related activities worldwide will also be emphasized.
The principal European marine minerals focus is on aggregates. The European marine aggregate industry is the most advanced in the world and serves as a model for aggregate development in other offshore areas. It is intended that papers on marine aggregates exploration, evaluation and recovery will be balanced by papers on environmental concerns and mitigation strategies, and papers on all these topics are invited.
The most important non-aggregate shelf mineral is diamond. Diamonds are mined in abundance off Southern Africa. Papers on the current state and future development scenarios of this industry are programmed and more are invited.
Hydrothermal minerals and mineralising processes occur both in and outside of European waters. Occurrences in the Mediterranean Sea and on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge are well known, and Mid-Ocean Ridges, Island Arcs and Oceanic Hotspots worldwide are also being found to host them. This is a fast moving subject and papers on up-to-date aspects of it worldwide are invited.
Underpinning all new minerals developments in the oceans are technical, environmental and legal concerns, which will also be a prime focus of the 2004 UMI.
Papers targeting the following subject areas are invited.
