HUGO people School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST)

The starboard side of the HUGO junction box in its new home on Loihi seamount. Experiments are installed and repaired via the Pisces V submersible.

A synaphobranchid visits the HUGO junction box. The actions of the submersible during repairs in January 1998 caught the interest of the ubiquitous shrimps and eel-like fishes like this one on Loihi's summit. Also visible here is the fine, gelatinous mud in which HUGO sits. The mud is easily disturbed and quickly limits visibility.

What is the Hawai'i Undersea Geo-Observatory? HUGO is a submarine observatory situated on the summit of Loihi seamount, an active undersea volcano. Data from HUGO are relayed to the Big Island of Hawai'i for real-time monitoring of the volcano's behavior. Click here to learn more about this exciting project.

Learn about the deployment of HUGO. HUGO was deployed in October of 1997. The cable was laid by the R/V Independance and was handed off to a shore team working at Honu'apo Pier on the Big Island. Information from the standpoints of both ship and shore can be accessed here
