Contours of salinity measured by CTD versus sigma-theta during HOT cruises. Cruise times are indicated by the symbols along the bottom axis. The average density of the sea surface for each cruise is connected by a heavy line. Data are the average of all casts for each cruise. Salinity scale is given by the color bar along the right side of the figure.
