HIGH-PRESSURE GEOPHYSICS AND GEOCHEMISTRY
Dept. of Geology and Geophysics, SOEST
The graduate program in High-Pressure Geophysics and Geochemistry
offers numerous opportunities for studying physical and chemical
properties of geological materials, including rocks, minerals, chemical
compounds (oxides and silicates), metals, alloys, silicate melts, and glasses.

Current Research Programs
Research programs include development of more accurate experimental
methods for measurements under simultaneously high-pressure and high-temperature
conditions for better modeling of the Earth's interior in terms of the crystal
structure and chemical composition, refinement of acoustic models of the ocean
floor, determination of properties important in finding and evaluating sources
of oil or geothermal energy, investigation of the structure of silicate melts
and glasses on a molecular level, and prediction of the properties of materials
at high pressures and temperatures.
