Rabaul Caldera
Rabaul Caldera has been the site of a number of historic volcanic eruptions,
most notably the 1937-1943 eruptions and the most recent eruptive phase, commencing
19 September. In 1986 the University of Hawaii research vessel Moana
Wave visited the Rabaul Caldera and collected sidescan and bathymetry using
the SeaMARC II swath mapping system. The sidescan data is reproduced here, including
aerial photography from the Australian Air Force.
