My research focuses on living and fossil organisms, and how they are chemically linked to the global environment. Using measurements of the stable isotopes of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen my group is working to elucidate information about metabolism and environment, both in the Human environment, and through Geologic Time. My areas of research include study of evaporite deposits and associated microbial communities, and using Natural Abundance Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometry (NA-SIMS) to measure natural isotopic abundances in biological systems. For my dissertation I examined how microorganisms are able to survive in geologic materials for tens of thousands to millions of years. My research is now focused on using stable isotopes on biological substrates (modern and ancient) to learn about the geologic past. (read more...)
