I was born in Montana, where I lived for the first 10 years of my life; this probably explains a lot to those that know me. Tangible fruits of spending 12 years in college include:
Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C., I came to the University of Hawai‘i in 1977 as an Assistant Professor. Currently I am Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Hawai‘i.
When not doing geology I spend my time building stone walls, messing with plants in the garden, and pursuing interests in music, cigars and Scotch whiskey.
I am a geologist/petrologist with experience in Hawaiian geology, the petrology of submarine and Hawaiian volcanic rocks, marine geology, geochemical analysis using X-ray fluorescence techniques, and the geochemistry of volcanic materials used in Polynesian tool making.
I have participated in 17 ocean-going research
cruises, 9 as chief or co-chief scientist. I am adept at finding
excuses to do field work in Hawai‘i.
Current research endeavors include:
I teach courses in Hawaiian Geology, Mineralogy and
Petrology. I especially like to run field trips, which is just
about the second most fun you can have with your clothes on.
A list of recent
publications is available.
