WEEKEND FIELD TRIPS ON O‘AHU
Geology is a field science, and even
though it means giving up a weekend day, it is important for GG101L students
to get outside and see real geology in person |
|||||
SE O‘ahu: The classic field trip to see Ko‘olau,
Honolulu series rejuvenation vents, giant landdslides,
and erosion. |
North Shore: We visit Kūkaniloko,
paleo-environments at Mokulē‘ia, Waimea, and Lā‘ie, and coastal
erosion at Kualoa. |
Wai‘anae: We look at the structure and erosion of
the old volcano, and paleo-environmental indicators from higher stands of the ocean. |
Lē‘ahi: Sometimes with the
assistance of GG305, we make a geologic map along the lower makai slopes of Lē‘ahi. |
‘Āina Haina:
Along with students in the Geologic Hazards course (GG130), we map landslide
features in a nearby neighborhood. |
Waipao: We learn about geologic, hydrologic, and
cultural features in a place that is replicating life in pre-contact Hawai‘i. |
