RS422 User interface The RS422 user communication interface is one of three possible interfaces available to experimenters (6, 7). This is a hardware-dependent choice and selection is made prior to deployment. The interface is an isolated RS422 to RS232 converter and is dynamically programmable to one of two terminal servers inside the observatory (14). The two terminal servers provide communication path redundancy. We anticipate returning the observatory package to the surface at every ROV servicing opportunity to install new hardware and experiments and upgrades.
