Cable Termination Frame

The cable termination frame consists of the front end of the HUGO Observatory, recovered after eight years in the water on Loihi volcano (http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/HUGO/). The termination will be lowered from the cable ship together with the Proof Module as part of the Phase 1 Installation (FIGURE).  The cable termination contains an SL pigtail (about 20 m long) terminated for testing in ST connectors and an electrical fitting. When the HAW-4 cable is cut and recovered, the test connectors will be cut off and the pigtail will be spliced to the HAW-4 cable with a universal splice. The SL pigtail enters a universal joint (in the strain relief) where two of the fibers are looped back and the remaining four fibers and electrical conductor enter a 0.5” whip that passes through a mechanical joint to an Ocean Design hybrid electro-optical wet-mate connector. This connector is the main connection to the observatory.  It will be connected to the Proof Module on ship before installation.

See “ALOHA Deployment Tasks”  for the current emplacement scenario.
