About ESF

System Application

Basic Components:

Cable: SL260 or SL580 Fiber optic cable.

Junction Box: The Junction box is an interface between the fiber optic cable and the Observatory. This interface contains the data communications multiplexer and converts the optical data to an electrical Ethernet signal. Supplied with wet-mateable connectors supplied by ODI allows the Observatory to be brought to the surface to be serviced.

Observatory: The Observatory controls the power and bandwidth assigned to each of eight user ports.

Seawater Return: A seawater return is connected when the Observatory is the only node on the cable.

Remote Experiment Module: An example of a Remote Experiment Module is the Aloha Observatory MOSEAN Mooring.

Local Experiment: An OBS (Ocean Bottom Seismometer), and hydrophone are just a couple of examples of experimental devices that can be connected to the Observatory as local experiments.   A Local Experiment can utilize RS232, RS422, or Ethernet to communicate with the Observatory interface through either a wet-mate or dry-mate connector.  However, it must be noted that using a dry-mate connector will require bringing the Observatory to the surface to connect the experiment.

Cable to Next Node: The Observatory can be one of many nodes on a fiber-optic cable system. In a multi-node Observatory system the Seawater return is disconnected and an additional cable which is attached to another Observatory is connected in its place.
