...about 70% of the earth's surface is covered with sediments
and sedimentary rocks, don't you think you should know more about
them?
This course will examine the origin of sedimentary rocks and will
focus on how the sedimentary rock record can be interpreted with
respect to past depositional and diagenetic environments. The course
will cover the origins and environments of soils, sands and sandstones,
conglomerates, mudrocks and shales, shallow water and will cover
the origins and environments of soils, sands and sandstones, conglomerates,
mudrocks and shales, shallow water and deep water carbonates (with
special emphasis on reefs and their surrounding environments), dolomites,
evaporites, ironstones, glauconites, phosphorites, cherts and biosiliceous
sediments. The class will meet for two 50 min. lecture periods and
one laboratory period per week.
