Course Objective

...about 70% of the earth's surface is covered with sediments and sedimentary rocks, don't you think you should know more about them?

This course will examine the origin of sedimentary rocks and will focus on how the sedimentary rock record can be interpreted with respect to past depositional and diagenetic environments. The course will cover the origins and environments of soils, sands and sandstones, conglomerates, mudrocks and shales, shallow water and will cover the origins and environments of soils, sands and sandstones, conglomerates, mudrocks and shales, shallow water and deep water carbonates (with special emphasis on reefs and their surrounding environments), dolomites, evaporites, ironstones, glauconites, phosphorites, cherts and biosiliceous sediments. The class will meet for two 50 min. lecture periods and one laboratory period per week.
