How did the Hawaiian Islands Form? Could you tell me when the different Hawaiian Islands were formed? How many volcanoes are active at this present time in hawaii? What are the most typical rocks currently being erupted from Kilauea's East Rift Zone? What is the general compositional category of the eruptive materials at Kilauea? When was the last time volcanoes on Oahu erupted? Is (Oahu's) Kaneohe Bay the crater for Ko'olau volcano and did this section of the island drop into the sea, creating the steep cliffs above Kaneohe? Why there are volcanoes in Hawaii? [I have two questions] How do geologists explain the fact that there is a string of seperate islands (5 islands - Hawaii,Maui,Molokai,Oahu,Kauai) instead of one continuous mountain chain? Does the hot spot vary in temperature over time? Is Pele's hair a crystalographic variant of "fools gold" or iron pyrite? Is its appearance in cavaties just below the surface indicating a vapor phase reaction? How can seismology be used to detect and map the presence of magma chambers beneath Kilauea Volcano? Why are the newest of the Hawaiian Islands the largest? Is tectonic movement slower now than it once was, or is the hotspot more active now? We are confused about place names (on a map of the Big Island of Hawaii): Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Kilauea, Pu'u O'o. Are these all part of the same volcano, or are there several volcanoes on the island? We are a 4th grade class at Hahaione Elementary and we are in search of some ans wers to questions about volcanoes on Oahu. How is Koko Crater classified in terms of volcano type? Also, could you list other noteworthy volcanoes on Oahu along with its classification (i.e. Punch- bowl)?

How does lava get enough pressure to break through the crust? I (would like) basic info about the 1963 eruption of Surtsey. What happened and what is the up to date condition? Is there a possible connection between the eruption of the Cerro Negro (Nicaragua) on 3 Nov 1999, and the presence of the hurricane Mitch at the same time? Is there anything countries like Indonesia and the Philippines can do with the tremendous amounts of volcanic deposits they are inudated with? What can you do with cubic kilometers of lahar deposits? Can molten rock\lava be produced by heating igneous rock to 2000 degrees in a furnace? What is the relationship between volcanoes, earthquakes, and plate-tectonics? Why are hotspot lavas enriched in (87/86)Sr relative to MORB? Does this characteristic tell any detail about hotspots' source depth? I know they originate at much greater depth, but can it yet be determined how deep? What kinds of xenoliths come up down there?
