The International Commission on the Middle Atmosphere (ICMA) is one of the 10 Commissions making up the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science (IAMAS), which in turn is one of the 8 Associations constituting the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). The IUGG meets in a worldwide Assembly every four years (...1991, 1995, 1999, 2003...). The individual IUGG associations also meet every four years (...1993, 1997, 2001..). ICMA has generally met alternately with the Scientific Assemblies of IAMAS and the International Association of Aeronomy and Geomagnetism (IAGA). The next meeting of ICMA will be held as part of the IUGG General Assembly in Perugia in 2007.

ICMA exists to foster international cooperation in research into the science of the middle atmosphere, defined loosely as stretching from the tropopause into the lower thermosphere. In addition to holding its biennial meetings in conjunction with IUGG, IAMAS or IAGA, ICMA sponsors or cosponsors other meetings and workshops. ICMA also has a number of working groups to facilitate cooperation in particular areas.

ICMA was the lead sponsor of Symposia 8 and 9 at the IAMAS Assembly held July 10-18, 2001, in Innsbruck, Austria.

ICMA sponsored symposia at the IUGG General Assembly in Sapporo, Japan, June 30-July 11, 2003.

ICMA sponsored symposia at the IAGA Scientific Assembly held in Toulouse, France, July 18-29, 2005.

ICMA sponsored symposia at the 24th IUGG general Assembly held in Perugia, Italy, July 2-13, 2007.
